She has not as far as I know. Not a peep! No public announcement of indignation of the behavior of the STR guests for Greg. My question is, does Ms. Campbell have any interests at all in what has been happening in her district since she was elected? Can she even relate to her constituents? Does she only listen to the groups who ensured her election, the unions? Yes, the City budget is under attack by the coronavirus and has taken a big hit, but she failed at even our most fundamental ask, the second trash pickup. So my question is, has she earned the right to finish her term? Should we wait until her term is up to find someone who is committed to the D2 constituents? Is it time to consider a recall?
There are many well known historic cities in Europe and around the world that initially welcomed short term rentals as a way to increase their tourism. But now, with the effects of gentrification changing the fundamental make up, these cities are doing their best to ward off the short term rentals much like our bodies are now trying to resist the coronavirus. There are those who believe we can regulate and control the disease, but without a vaccine, there is little we can do. Fortunately, we in San Diego have a vaccine, called the municipal code. It is time to save our communities!
Many of the owner occupied short term rentals are generally fine, although there are cases when the short term renters intimidate the owners on site. But then we have out right confrontations like the one Greg Knight ran into last night near his house.
In Greg's words, "Thought I would send these over. This is from last night addressing a vacation rental who had people parked in our neighbors spots. Two came out and started a fight and I got jumped from the side. This is the real facts of having to deal with new people in your neighborhood daily with no one watching over them. The two that did this jumped in their car and sped off. Police were dealing with the stabbings and said we have no one to come by. They did finally show up at 4am. This is the reality a lot of us look at on a daily basis and shouldn't have to."
The San Diego Police Department continue to investigate the incident (6/17/2020)
Greg has been an active member of the Mission Beach community for some tome, serving on the Mission Beach Town Council and running for president of the town council in 2019. But his views on short term rentals were too neutral and Matt Gardner was voted in again. Matt loves to exaggerate the truth on vacation rentals; at times his nose grows out a couple of inches, but he will do and say whatever to make his point.
This is what happens when there are so many short term rentals in Mission Beach that the renters feel emboldened and entitled. WE PAID THE MONEY. WE CAN PARK WERE WE WANT. WE CAN THROW OUR TRASH WHERE WE WANT. NO ONE TELLS US WHAT TO DO ON OUR VACATION, ESPECIALLY AFTER A COUPLE SIX-PACKS.
For those of us who want this kind of action, there are a few bars in PB where I can guarantee nightly confrontations. But, and again in caps, THIS WAS A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE ONLY REASON WE ARE LOSING THIS IS BECAUSE OF ORGANIZATIONS LIKE THE MISSION BEACH TOWN COUNCIL WHO CONDONE THREATS TO RESIDENTS AND ARE COMMITTED TO CONVERT ONE-HUNDRED PERCENT OF MISSION BEACH INTO SHORT TERM RENTALS.
BLAINE SMITH, OWNER OF 710 BEACH RENTALS WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN TURNING THE MISSION BEACH TOWN COUNCIL. AND HE WOULD LIVE TO TURN THE PBTC, BUT I GUARANTEE THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. BLAINE TALKS AS THOUGH HE IS MR. COMPROMISE, BUT THEN HE HAS THREATENED A RESIDENT LIVING NEXT DOOR TO ONE OF HIS SHORT TERM RENTAL UNITS WITH LITIGATION. THERE WERE A BUNCH OF DRUNKEN HIGH SCHOOL GRADS RAISING HELL, BUT WHEN THE RESIDENT COMPLAINED, HE WAS THE ONE THREATENED.
This is a bigger issue that just these two incidents. Many elderly residents lock their doors and shut their windows to stop the party noise and irresponsible behavior of these revelers going on to 2 or 3 am. And who is responsible at the City of San Diego? Mayor Faulconer............FAULCONER..................FAULCONER. Faulconer has a history of throwing residents under the bus to maximize the San Diego economy. And I am 100 percent sure that we will continue to get the same treatment if Todd Gloria is elected mayor. Todd Gloria's position on e-scooters on the boardwalks with no geofencing -> it just comes down to personal responsibility. Isn't this the same message just posted by the Mission Beach Town Council a few days ago........................
Summer Etiquette for STVRs - Reminders -courtesy of Cyndi Francisco
As Summer rentals begin I would ask Managers and owners to...
1. Email guests about face coverings, as they are mandatory.
2. Remind them they are guests to our community/neighborhood and that they should respect our neighbors.
3. Remind them to keep all noise to a conversation level so as not disturb the residents. Everyone is extra touchy right now.
4. If a neighbor speaks to the vacationer about noise, remind them to respect their request.
5. Post conservative quiet hours on your patios and balconies.
6. Believe the neighbors to your rental/s when they call you about problems in one of your rentals.
7. Last but not least, with no second trash pick up, check your trash cans several times a week and clean up, bag up and do what ever is necessary to keep the trash in order.
This may be a summer where you might have to do more hands on care for our community. We are blessed with many caring owners, and managers who work very hard at doing the right thing.
Cyndi's message while hopeful, albeit a bit naive, grossly underestimates the situation when there are so many STRs in Mission Beach owned by out of town investors, who do not give a shit about residents of Mission Beach and property management companies who use threats and the voice of the town council to stay in business rather than quality and service for visitors, and who also do not live in Mission Beach.
THE TIME HAS COME TO STOP THESE SHORT TERM RENTALS......
