There is an excellent article in the San Diego Union Tribune today entitled "Post-tourist Amsterdam." Mission Beach probably comes closest to the situation in Amsterdam with tourist gentrification pushing the local residents to a point where they needed to push back. Claiming that the communities were primarily tourist havens when in reality they were residential neighborhoods the same as La Jolla and OB and OB, except for its reputation. And this is a reputation reinforced by owner/investors of short term rentals desperate to maximize their profits with little or no consideration or concern for the residents.
These by the way are residents who fight to have graffiti removed, and push for rules and regulations for e-scooters, voting for them to be off of the boardwalk only to have them show up now after the virus has become secondary to racial protests. I would hope, no I do hope that residents of Mission Beach will have recognized the benefits of far fewer short term rentals, airplanes flying overhead and scooters lying on the ground everywhere.
